How are solar costs calculated?

As solar installations become increasingly commoditized, pricing remains opaque. While numerous headlines highlight the decreasing costs of solar, this primarily pertains to hardware expenses for modules and inverters.

Solar pricing is generally divided into two main categories: hardware and soft costs.

  • These are physical materials such as modules, inverters, wire, electrical panels, etc. These prices don’t have much variability across companies, and only vary by the size and scope of your system.

  • These are the more variable numbers and include labor, office space, permits, etc. The largest and most variable soft cost is the Customer acquisition cost, which is mostly sales rep commissions and typically around 20-30% of the purchase price.
